We were receiving fewer environmental applications than we’d expect and so commissioned research in order to:

• understand funding needs of the environmental sector and what barriers there may be that hinder their fundraising
• inform our grant-making so we can address the most critical issues in a practical way
• share learnings with the sector and other funders as part of our commitment to being a transparent funder

A key finding was that charities in the sector find it challenging to explain complicated issues to the public which then impacts their fundraising. As a result of the Prioritising our Planet report, we partnered with the Media Trust to create Weston Communicating Climate, an intensive communications training programme for environment charities.
