Family Gateway

Family Gateway supports families and children who are suffering from a range of multiple and complex issues that cause poverty and disadvantage. Working with some of the most disadvantaged communities of North and South Tyneside and South East Northumberland, the charity has adapted the ‘Barefoot Professional’ model from India. This model employs local parents as Family Entrepreneurs who have themselves experienced similar issues to the people they support and are able to engage families that other services have found difficult to reach.

Last year the charity’s Family Entrepreneurs gave intensive support to 440 vulnerable families to address underlying issues that negatively affect their lives, reducing anti-social behaviour, school absence and generational unemployment.

Family Gateway shared their five year strategic plan with the Foundation. They demonstrated that they had developed over time by carefully evaluating their work and by conducting service gaps analysis in new locations. Family Gateway had not applied to the Foundation before, however they submitted a clear and thorough application with a sensible budget and the Trustees were delighted to make an unrestricted grant towards the charity’s core costs.

“Funding from Garfield Weston has come at exactly the right time for Family Gateway as we look to expand into new disadvantaged communities and diversify our services to include trading enterprises that will generate unrestricted income to support our work. The funds have enabled us to invest in core staffing and other support and services to help initiate this growth, and build new stakeholder relationships that will help us achieve sustainability in the longer.” Amanda Maskery, Chair.
