Ballet Cymru

Ballet Cymru is an international touring ballet company. They aim to challenge common perceptions of classical ballet and engage with diverse and minority groups. They take their professional performances beyond big stages and cities to audiences in excess of 10,000 a year. Their Outreach and Education programme works with over 4,000 people annually including the visually impaired and blind, special educational needs and disabled groups and schools.

Ballet Cymru are in Newport which has barely any arts provision and the company keeps their ticket prices at an affordable level; however this has an impact on their ability to generate earned income. Not having a permanent home makes building a regular donor base particularly challenging.  In order to continue to deliver world-class dance to areas of low arts engagement, the charity needs a strong infrastructure and so the Foundation made an unrestricted grant over three years to help them invest in key administrative and back of house functions which were increasingly under pressure.  Ballet Cymru demonstrated that they were reviewing their fundraising in order to expand their income sources.

“Funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation has come at a crucial time for Ballet Cymru as we consolidate our position as an inclusive welsh ballet company. Funding for our core activities has been instrumental in helping with our cash flow, to plan more strategically and to lever additional funding.” Darius James OBE, Artistic Director, Ballet Cymru
